As 2022 almost comes to an end, we're taking the time to look back on the year and reflect on the successes.

From placing candidates to securing deals with industry-leading brands, it all comes down to our fantastic team of recruiters.

Jodie Potter specialises in Commercial, Marketing, Technical (and more!) and celebrated a year in recruitment in September.

We spoke to Jodie to catch up on how the year has been and what lessons have been learnt.

What surprised you the most about the recruitment world?

That no two days are the same! I love the idea of planning your week and looking at what you can achieve knowing that each day will vary.

Each day can bring a different outcome and can be a mixture of ups and downs but the challenges you face just mean you develop more and more!

You are constantly learning different processes and meeting new people every day.

What are you most proud of achieving since September 2021?

In my work life, I would say that I'm most proud of my overall development as a recruiter within such a short time. I worked for over ten years in real estate so when I joined Blakeney, I had to learn a completely new career path - as well as learn a completely new industry within FMCG. It’s been challenging, but I’ve loved every minute!

For me, moving back to my hometown with my partner and my little girl after 10 years of living abroad. It has been a stressful year but one I'm incredibly proud of. We have recently bought and moved into our first home here in the UK so we are very excited about what's to come.

What has been the biggest culture shock coming back to the UK after living abroad for ten years?

I miss my early morning walks on the Melbourne beaches... Scarborough beach just isn't the same!

Did anything challenge you over the year that you didn't expect? What did you learn from it?

For me, the biggest challenge was understanding how hard recruitment can be when the market changes and you have to adapt during these times.

Sometimes small changes and prior planning can make a huge change in how things work out.

I take the time to understand others' needs, to guide them through the recruitment process and then use my knowledge of the industry and I see this make a real difference in my results.

Do you have a highlight from the year? What was it?

I would say a real highlight over the year for me was when I worked closely with a family who arrived in the UK from Ukraine, and I placed a candidate from this family in the role of her dreams.

The role offered the flexibility she needed to support her family during a difficult time, and it felt rewarding to know I had supported someone to help them start a new life here in the UK.

And finally, what's your favourite part of the job?

There's definitely more than one! Firstly, you are part of your own success! I love the sense of achievement you feel when making a placement. Seeing the consultancy process from beginning to end with both clients and candidates, knowing you have supported someone with securing their next career move, and hearing how they have progressed - there is no better feeling.

I love how supportive the team are at Blakeney Point, no matter which sector you work within we can always reach out to each other for guidance and honest advice. We have a great team culture here and I think that's really important for the long-term stability and growth of the business.

Thank you Jodie for sharing your experience with us.

We are looking forward to what the next years bring together!
