When it comes to interviews, we know a thing or two. Find out our tips to make sure you are prepared for your next interview.
When it comes to interviews, we know a thing or two. It’s no surprise to anyone that a strong interview will be a determining factor in securing a new position.
The key is preparation – the more prepared you are, the more confident you will be.
Whether you have applied for an entry-level job or a senior role, employers will be looking out for the tips we’ve outlined below.
Research the company
Researching the company that you have applied to work for is the most crucial step you can take.
Do be fooled into thinking that all you need to know for the job application will get you by in your interview. Once you’ve secured your interview, you should read about the company, its goals, mission, products, or services.
Look at the website for the company you’re applying for, write down facts you find interesting, and start thinking of questions you would like answered by the interviewer. Check the news for any recent reports about the company to ensure you know everything you need to know about the company.
Make a good first impression
If you’re going to a face-to-face interview, plan your trip there – consider doing a trial run if it's in an unfamiliar location.
Bring your CV and ensure you know the specifics and the dates so you can confidently talk and answer questions about it.
For a video interview, minimise technical issues by testing your video tools at least once before the day before your interview and on the day of your interview.
Get your video camera set up all sorted in a quiet and comfortable place and aim to be ready to go 15 minutes before the interview. Make sure you have got good lighting and a glass of water - and try to make sure you won’t be interrupted.
Pay attention to your body language
Remember to keep eye contact with the interviewer during the interview – but don’t start a staring content! Maintain eye contact to look engaged, confident and friendly.
Be mindful of your posture and try to keep sat up straight to look professional.
Show your enthusiasm with your nonverbal behaviour and look interested in the questions your interviewer is asking. At the appropriate times, smile, nod your head and emphasize your points with hand gestures.
Dress appropriately for the company
Picking the right outfit for your job interview can be a daunting task.
The care you put into your presentation can be a sign of your interest in the role and shows a desire to make a good impression.
If you have applied for a corporate position, go for a professional business look. But if you’ve applied to a start-up, a more relaxed outfit might be more suitable.
If you have any doubts, drop a message to HR asking what the dress code is at their company.
Arrive on time
It should go without saying that you must arrive on time to make a good impression. So, make sure you leave for your interview with plenty of time to spare.
Aim to be there around 10 minutes in advance to make a good first impression and give yourself some extra time to prepare and relax.
Don't just talk - actively listen
In an interview, listening is just as important as answering the interviewers' questions. If you are not paying attention, you won’t be able to give the best responses.
You will be able to build rapport with your interviewer by actively listening as the conversation will feel more natural and have more give and take rather than generic, canned answers.
Prepare questions
When you're interviewing for a job, it's important to understand that the interview is a two-way street. You want to get all the information you can about the job, of course, but it is equally important for them to learn more about you.
Having a list of questions makes you look interested, enthusiastic and engaged—all qualities that will make them want to hire you.
The last few minutes of an interview are also your final chance to highlight your relevant qualities and experience, as well as your desire for the job. It lets them know that you've done your research and are eager to learn more about what they can offer you.
If you plan a few well-thought-out queries, you end the interview on a high.
Understand the type of interview
There are several different kinds of interviews and it’s important to understand which you are going to do. All interviews serve the same purpose: to give employers a chance to evaluate your skills and knowledge, as well as your personality.
Depending on the type of job you have applied for, it’s likely you will go through various types of interviews. Different interview types can include phone interviews, in-person interviews, group interviews, and lunch interviews.
Sell your strengths and expertise
You want to make sure that you are selling your strengths and expertise in the interview. The best way to do this is by being authentic, concise and upbeat.
Keep your answers short and concise, make sure you have answered the question asked and let the interviewer lead the conversation.
Always respond truthfully to the questions you are asked and bring your answers back round to your skills and accomplishments by providing examples of solutions and results you have achieved.
Remember: Never speak negatively about your current or former employers or colleagues—interviewers are looking for candidates who can overcome tough situations. Focus on what you’ve gained from your experience, what makes you unique as a candidate and what inspires you about this particular job opportunity.
Relax and stay calm
You have done everything you could to prepare for the interview. You came well-dressed, you participated actively in the conversation, and you made sure to ask questions that would help you understand more about the company and its needs. Now it's time to relax!
You've done a great job, and now it's up to the company's decision. All you can do is wait for their call. Do something fun—go out with friends, take your dog for a walk, or watch your favourite movie—and let yourself enjoy this moment of rest knowing you did all you could.
